The former Executive Director of Joining Forces is the newest member of the Easterseals DC MD VA Board of Directors, bringing with her a deep passion for serving military families.
"Sheila L. Casey brings valuable experience to our Board of Directors,” says Jon Horowitch, President and CEO of Easterseals DC MD VA. “Her commitment to military families, as well as her significant expertise in finance and operations for nonprofits, will enhance our ability to serve veterans, active-duty service members, and their families.”
Most recently, Casey was a Special Assistant to the President and the Executive Director of Joining Forces, the First Lady’s initiative supporting military and veteran families, caregivers, and survivors. She also served as Chief Operating Officer at news source The Hill for more than 20 years.
As a military spouse of 41 years, I am passionate about the support Easterseals provides to veterans and military families,” says Casey.
A military spouse with decades of service, Casey appreciates the importance of a healthy family life to ensure overall military readiness. Her experience has given her the opportunity to serve on a number of military-related boards. For instance, Casey has served as the board chair of Blue Star Families, as a member of the board of the National Military Family Association, and on the advisory board of the Military Child Education Coalition. She also currently serves on the Bob Woodruff Foundation Leadership Council.
“I strongly support Easterseals’ mission of inclusion and accessibility, empowering people with disabilities, and, as a military spouse of 41 years, I am passionate about the support Easterseals provides to veterans and military families,” she says. “I believe I can make a meaningful impact to these communities.”
Casey is a two-time recipient of the Defense Distinguished Civilian Service Medal, the highest level of recognition given by the Department of Defense. She has also received the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Impact Award for Lifetime Achievement and the Order of the White Plume for her contribution to enhancing the quality of life for Army families.
She begins her service on the Board of Directors on September 1.
