Tap Into Your Network
Ask for what you need from the people who get you.
When you’re job searching, don’t forget this one thing. You don’t have to do it alone.
You have a network of fellow veterans, coworkers, and people you’ve met along the way. Even a simple conversation with the right person can point you in the right direction. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people who’ve either been where you are, or work in the field you want to go into. Most folks actually want to help. They just need to know how.
And that’s the key. Ask with purpose. When you reach out, be clear about what you’re looking for. Do you need advice? Feedback on your resume? A connection to someone in the industry? The clearer you are, the easier it is for someone to give you what you need.
But remember, networking isn’t a transaction. It’s a relationship. Stay connected. Follow up. Check in. Look for ways to add value back to the people who help you.
Your network is bigger than you think. Use it.
