Forging a New Path to Purpose

As a 46-year-old U.S. Army veteran, Lawrence had what many would consider the American dream: a steady career he loved, a family he cherished, and a promising future. But a series of personal and legal challenges changed everything. 

After a divorce, Lawrence faced federal charges that led to incarceration. Upon release, he found employment but was re-incarcerated for a probation violation. When he was released again, Lawrence was determined to rebuild. 

He relocated to Baltimore and eventually found an apartment through the VA. Lawrence’s main goal was to find long-term work. Despite his education and experience, he faced repeated rejection.  

“Even places that hire people with backgrounds like mine wouldn’t give me a chance,” he recalls. “I just wanted someone to see that I could be a great employee, if given the opportunity.” 

That opportunity came when Lawrence was referred to the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) at Easterseals DC MD VA. At his first meeting with his HVRP employment specialist, Lawrence had only one pair of pants and two shirts. HVRP arranged for new work clothes to ensure Lawrence could interview for jobs with confidence. 

Next, Lawrence completed an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification, recommended by his employment specialist, to boost his credentials for working in the warehousing and supply chain industry. Shortly after, Lawrence was offered a warehousing associate position with Home Chef. 

With a new job and stable housing, Lawrence feels renewed hope for the future. “It’s been a long road, but things are finally turning around,” he says proudly. “I’m grateful to Easterseals and my employment specialist for believing in me and helping me take these next steps.”
