Structure, Support, and a Place to Shine

More than four decades ago, when Denise was just 25, she was in an auto accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury. She was no longer able to work and required round-the-clock care. 

Denise’s mother found Easterseals and Denise started attending the Adult Day Services program a few days each week. “That really brought structure back to her life, which was a lifesaver,” said Denise’s sister, Lori. “And Easterseals has continued to be a lifesaver to our family.”  

Routine is highly beneficial for people with brain injuries and Lori explained how the regular schedule of a day at Easterseals has benefitted Denise. “The structure has made it so that she feels more normal and can proceed with the day knowing what's going to happen.” 

Over the years, as Lori became her sister's primary caregiver, Easterseals worked Lori into Denise’s care plan. Staff also helped the family locate additional services that have improved Denise’s mental and physical well-being, such as occupational therapy. 

Overall, the family appreciates that Easterseals staff sees Denise as an individual, with so much to give. “She's got a lot to say and a lot to share and they appreciate her for exactly who she is,” Lori concluded, “which is something that we really value. She's just been able to blossom at Easterseals.”
