A Full Life

Colleen was born in May 1960, the youngest of eight children, at a time when Down syndrome was not well understood. Her mother, a nurse, sought out information about the condition and insisted that her daughter be given every opportunity – even when it meant disregarding doctors and other experts.

Colleen began attending Easterseals early childhood development program at age 3. “They had a Montessori-related program, applied to developmentally disabled children,” explains Colleen’s sister Caryl. 

Her brother Craig notes that the program “had a huge impact on Colleen’s ability to learn earlier and faster, and to succeed in the future as a learner and ultimately as an employee.” His sister went on to have a 30-year career at the Government Printing Office. “Instead of needing help, Colleen gave help in many ways throughout those 30 years.”

When Colleen retired at age 54, there was an opportunity for her to volunteer at the Easterseals Inter-generational Center. “She felt a sense of accomplishment to be associated with other people,” Craig adds. “It was a good opportunity for her to volunteer and contribute and I think that kept her sharp, engaged, and happy.”

Even as she aged, Colleen remained an active member of the community. “I think Colleen was extremely fortunate to have had the path that she had, starting early with Easterseals,” says Caryl. “There’s no question that she had the preparation she needed for what she went on to do later. Colleen had a much fuller life than anyone would have predicted.”
