Helping Harry Take Big Steps

When Harry’s family moved from California to Northern Virginia, his parents were concerned. Could they find an early education center that would accept their son, who has Down syndrome, and help him grow?  

“There are not many fully inclusive preschool options in the area,” says mom Kathryn, “so we felt lucky to find Easterseals.” 

The family enrolled Harry in Easterseals’ Jo Ann & Carl McNair Community Child Development Center in Falls Church when he was 3. Harry began in a classroom with 2-year-olds because of delays in his motor skills, particularly difficulty navigating stairs, which the Center accommodated. He continues to receive occupational therapy and speech services. 

“Harry’s speech and independence have blossomed at Easterseals,” Kathryn adds. “His speech improves every week because he is constantly talking to his typical peers. He grows more independent with every day because the teachers emphasize helping and class jobs.” 

Mostly what Harry’s parents appreciate about Easterseals is the respect that staff afford their son. “They accept Harry for who he is and meet him where he is. They push him to improve, but always at his own pace,” Kathryn concludes.
